Bit of an update on things.
In the last month and a half I've been healing up at my parents' place. It's a bit more friendly to someone on crutches, mainly because most of the bathrooms in this place have handrails to assist - something left over from when my mother was recovering from surgery many years ago. The rails were invaluable during the first few weeks when the shortest walk was exhausting and sitting and standing alone was hard. Even now I use the one in the bath. I hope to head back to the apartment in a few weeks when I'm even more mobile.
sights_alined arrived, and suddenly things got a lot better. She has been such a fantastic support to me, and endlessly patient with my moodswings, my frustration and my tears. I often try to thank her, and she just rolls her eyes at me and says, "In sickness and in health, right?" I am lucky, so very lucky.
Two weeks after the accident I got x-rays to take to my orthopaedic surgeon.
Left - view from the front. Right - view from the side, but reversed because I'm a dork.
Closeup of the fracture. If you're cringing or shocked, that's normal. I suddenly understood why the guy taking my x-rays in the hospital had winced and told me I had an impressive break. I was pretty quiet coming out of the x-ray place. To give you a sense of scale, the plate is about 2/3 the length of my tibia. In total I have seen 12 screws - 6 are clustered at the base and may look like 5, one mostly obscures the other at that angle.
I took those to my orthopaedic surgeon so he could see my progress and get me a fibreglass cast. Instead, he cut my plaster cast off, took my stitches out (22 stitches! Never had any before this), and sent me off bare-legged. I was pretty surprised (so was everyone else) and it was scary at first to have my leg so bare and exposed to anything bad that could happen. I ended up liking the freedom, though, because it meant my leg wasn't so heavy and I could do things more easily.
We had a scare about 3-4 weeks after the accident, where it looked like my foot had an infection (potentially due to the cast rubbing). Words like 'osteomyelitis' (bone infection) and 'cellulitis' (skin infection) were tossed around, and I was pretty worried. I got sent for more x-rays and blood tests, and headed off to my surgeon again.
This is basically looking at the back of my ankle. The surgeon barely had to take more than a quick glance at everything before he told me that I had a minor skin infection and the cause of the swelling was actually due to having more broken bones - in my foot. I have two fractured metatarsals and a fractured cuboid, all on the car side of the accident. They wouldn't have been found while I was in hospital because the angle to take those x-rays would've been pretty impossible with how my leg was. They make the healing and physio a bit more complicated, but nothing particularly changes because of it - rest, keep leg up, etc. They'll all heal up around the same time.
And finally, 6 weeks after the accident, I saw the orthopaedic again. More x-rays, and not that much difference to my untrained eyes.
He said there was little sign of callus and gave me permission to put 50% of my weight on that leg, which should majorly help the healing process. This means I still need crutches, but I can get around much more easily and I'm nowhere near as quickly exhausted, because I have another leg sharing the load. I won't see him for another 4.5 weeks now. It's a frustrating process because I'm so close to walking and I can't do it without the crutches. Really hoping I won't need them after the next visit.
In the meantime, I'm doing physio twice a week and I'm working from home (hooray for being a programmer). My ankle range is massively limited, and it's hard work to try and get it flexible again. Trying to stretch it has occasionally been painful enough to get me crying, but I'm slowly getting better.

For those of you who didn't already know: I had a motorcycle accident on Wednesday afternoon on my way home from work. I'm doing okay and am healing up at home, but thought I'd put down the full story for my memory's sake and the curious types.
( Cut for massive length. Includes pics.Collapse )
tl;dr: Compound fracture to my lower right leg, beautiful bike is no more, and I get to see sights_alined. Things could be a lot worse. I'm lucky.

sights_alined left for Canada today. I think it gets harder every time, but at least we know this wait won't be a long one if the plan goes okay. Pretty much all of her stuff is still here so it's all ready for next time. It gives me this weird impression that she's only stepped out for a moment and she'll walk back in any time now. It's comforting but it makes my heart ache too.
My mum called me this afternoon to ask how I was taking it. I was holding out okay with short answers up until I realised she was crying, so of course I started too. It was a bit funny and a bit sweet and I'm really glad they get along so well.
Will have to get around to posting some photos.

sights_alined is here and that makes me very, very happy. All mine until the end of November. <3
I got a new rear tire for my bike - about 15000km on the previous one. Not bad when I've had it less than a year? Overall the bike is going well. The occasional squeak in random weather, and the fuel tank chirps at me when it's lonely, but no real troubles. I have duct tape on it which makes it look a little less classy, but I'd rather that than scrape the shit out of it with my tank bag magnets or the bungee cord hooks. It's so pretty <3
I took sights_alined to Animania over the weekend of the 5th-6th. We had a table to run, so I sat her at the corner of it and made her draw pictures to sell. I'm such a slavedriver. It went well though. She made over $100 for herself over the weekend in $5 sketches of nerds and characters. My opinion was that they were a little underpriced but they were easier to sell that way :/
missdeep was there for a whole week over the event as well, so we had the whole family living in the Fortress. Many lols were had, though we have a confoundingly full bottle of Vanilla Coke left over. I hope she can visit again before sights_alined has to go back to that frozen wasteland she calls a home country.
On the Saturday night of the convention we also had a bucks party to go to. It was for a guy I've known since high school, his sister was in my year and is my friend. We're pretty close (he got me the first out of the two roses I've ever been given) so I was pretty glad I could go, even if we had to leave a bit early due to more convention the next day. We spent the evening in the VIP function room of Pure Platinum in Sydney. "It's a strip club where naked women dance all night long," as sights_alined puts it. (I can't argue, it's the truth.) The beer was expensive but my friends kept buying them for me so I didn't have to. I tried to buy them drinks wherever I could but I'm clearly lacking in timing skills. We were divided into a few tables, and we happened to be at a table with a gay guy and a straight guy who wasn't interested in small-breasted women, so we spent our time commenting on the quality of the lace/number of rhinestones on their outfits and butterfaces. I think it made for a lot more fun than we would've had otherwise - sights_alined was on the verge of putting out her eyeballs with an empty beer bottle a few times. She's not much into looking at boobs for a flaming homosexual :/ Neither was I, really - it was more about the people we went there with. So yeah, I had a pretty good time. Although I may have scarred my girlfriend for life.
:D
Anyway. I took some time off that first week, but I'm back at work now. Might take some time off around our birthdays, or closer to the end of visit. Not really sure what works yet, but I have enough leave accrued to do whatever, really. We haven't really planned sightseeing this time around, but there's a few places I think we'd like to go to again, and a few more new places.
I found out yesterday that one of my close family friends (pretty much an uncle to me, I've known him all my life) died of cancer on the Saturday night. It's been a long fight - over 7 years now I think - so it wasn't unexpected. Still sucks though. The funeral is this Thursday, so my sister will pick me up and we'll go together. They're holding it at the same place they held Zenta's so many years ago. It's a really pretty garden and the weather looks to be good, and I think that's about all you can ask of a funeral.
I think that's about it for now.

[05 Jul 2009|09:52pm] |
Noticed I hadn't updated in a while thanks to nostalgiafreak. :P (Thanks.)
So, not-very-briefly:
- The trip to Queensland over Easter was great. The weather was crap and some of the roads were scary as hell when combined with heavy rain and my lack of familiarity with them, but I feel like I learned more about my limits and my riding.
I got to see my grandparents and some relatives I haven't seen since I was a kid. I also got to play with fireworks with one of my uncles - never done that before. As of now my grandfather is still alive, though we haven't heard much from up there since. It was a nice ride and I'm glad I did it. My ninja kept up with my dad's R1200GS. I'm really happy with that, not bad for a little roadbike. Eventually I hope to post some pictures from this.
- At work, we finally went into production on the 31st of May. The first week was very stressful, with some major incidents and in general a heavy bombardment of email that I still haven't quite recovered from. None of this was helped by our team leader taking annual leave for a month shortly after we went in.
I'm managing it a lot better now, with a lot of thanks to my remaining (new) team member who's picked up the system really quickly and a boss who keeps making it clear to me that I can only do what I can do. He doesn't expect miracles, just that I do my part and do my best, and I find that really motivating. Our team leader should be back next week as well, so that's a relief. It'll be good to have a third person in our on-call rotation so I can actually have a week where I won't be called up. As good as the money is.
- I spent my Ruddbux on new computer parts shortly before the end of financial year so that I could include it on this year's tax. Depreciation? I'm glad I have a friend who happens to be an accountant. It's amazing to no longer have to juggle applications to keep my RAM and cpu usage down. Things don't lag anymore. I am a happy nerd. I'm still working out some issues with the bluray player I picked up for cheap, and I still have a lot of software to install and a RAID-1 to set up, but that'll be fun.
missdeep came over for a week to spend time with us and to attend Supanova. It was great to see her for such a long period of time and to hang out like a family again, though missing one important part ( sights_alined). Supanova went pretty well for StrangeHead, though we do tend to do better at Animania. I bought a lot of nerdy things that I'm really happy with and I sold some stuff I was no longer into. Amongst the things I brought home was a character study of Huntress (Birds of Prey) by Nicola Scott. I was pretty excited when I realised she was right near our table on the Saturday afternoon, but too nervous to ask her for something (anything). Then on Sunday she had a sign up saying she did sketches, so I got one. She was really friendly and great to talk to, and it was interesting to hear about her work with Gail Simone. I'm glad I got over my nerves.
missdeep must've been infected at Supanova, because she came down with some sort of really bad cold/flu thing mid-week. I'm not really good at looking after feverish people and there's not a lot we could do in the first place really, but I tried. Friday was particularly bad, moreso in retrospect when I realised she didn't remember a few things the next day that she'd said on Friday. But she was looking and acting a lot better on Saturday, which is good because we then sent her off to New Zealand. Go go plague!
- Thursday night my headlight went out and I had to ride home in the dark thanks to it being winter. It's pretty terrifying feeling invisible and being surrounded by metal boxes that weigh about 10-20 times what my bike does. Out of consideration for drivers I didn't put my high-beams on until I left the well-lit areas, but no one seemed to notice anyway once they were on. Good to know next time, I guess.
Luckily I'd planned to get my brake pads changed on Friday, so I just got my mechanic to put in a new globe at the same time. They didn't even charge me extra. Awesome guys.
- I bought waterproof Dririder Blizzard pants to keep me warm and dry through winter about a month and a half ago. One week into wearing them, a rainstorm helped me discover a leak at the crotch. Luckily that was on the way home and not to work, or I would've had an interesting wet patch to explain. I put them in for warranty repair, and got a call a few weeks later saying my new ones were waiting for me. Two weeks later and I still haven't picked them up... I really should get around to that, I miss being warm.
And that's about it. Next convention is September. I did really well in this year's performance appraisal and by all reports our company is still paying bonuses this year, so I might get something there. That would be helpful. I hope to see sights_aligned again soon. <3

Rambling updates. <3
Work continues on endlessly. Current date for going into production is the 9th of May, but it may slip again - depends on other projects now, not ours. For a few days I had nothing to do other than read news articles and write little vbscripts to make my life easier. Now they've started another round of testing, so I'm back into defect-fixing as they raise them. Sort of hoping that they don't let it slip again, because my team leader will be going away from around mid May to mid June and I don't really want to face production alone.
Hit 6000km on my bike just the other day, so I'm taking it in for a service tomorrow. It's nice that I no longer need a service every 3 months. It's been 5 months since I got the 1000km service, so I think that's pretty good. Going on a long trip soon, though, so the next won't be so long. Bike is going well. I bought swingwarm knobs for it the other day along with a rear stand to use them with. I forgot to double-check the knobs after my first couple of rides, and subsequently lost one of the knobs when it managed to vibrate itself out. I of course had bought the expensive black ones, and now I have to fork out for them again.
Mini-Animania Sydney was on last weekend. Some friends and I ran a table rather successfully. Guess all that time running one for the club has made us pretty good at it. I think it's less an exercise in money-making (although we are making money that goes straight back into the project) and more just... seeing where we can go with it? Seeing what works? It's a bit exhausting on the day (over 5 hours standing and selling stuff before I got food) but it's fun. Need another person on table though so we all get a chance to have a break and spend money on merchandise, though. I ended up with Vexille (out of curiosity) and the Inoue Takehiko artbook Water. It's filled with colour Vagabond art, so I am happy.
My remaining grandfather is dying of advanced prostate cancer, so we are riding up the coast to see him for a couple of days over Easter. Leaving on the 10th, back on the 15th. My parents and I will ride (unless the weather is going to be crap) and my sister and her family will take the car. It will be about a 2000km round trip, which is why my next service will be sooner. We'll get to see my uncle on the way back as well. It will be the first time I have seen my grandfather in years, and probably the last time as well.
I keep staying up too late for how early I wake up. My housemate and I are renewing our lease for another 6 months. Assuming the owners want to keep us. I hope so, given how impressed the property manager was with our last inspection. I need to go over my money so I know how much I can put away by when.
Not long till we know where we're headed with things.

Bit of an update on things.
( tldr; work is okay, no sign of being firedCollapse )
Um.
Been playing lots and lots of House of the Dead: Overkill on the Wii. leviathan777 and I bought the Bang Bang box set for the Hand Cannons that came with it, and haven't regretted a single moment of it. Even the traumatic and lol ending sequence in story mode. It's brilliant and the replay value is great. I think I've played story mode the equivalent of 2-3 times in less than a week. Not tired of it yet.
Been catching up on a lot of reading as well. Watchmen (in time for the movie), Speed Grapher vol 2, Mushishi vol 6, Black Lagoon vols 1-3. Currently on the Graveyard Book.
The crappy exchange rate is making me think more about what I'm buying, too. Preordered GSC Saber Lily, Alter Bounty Hunter Yoko, Alter Aozaki Touko. Cancelled a Haruhi for the last. Thankfully they're all a few months away. I only have Nendoroid Yoko to worry about this month.
I sold my GPX to a family friend, so there's money towards the grand plan. I miss it a little, but I can't get over how much I enjoy the new Ninja. It handles so nicely, and I can't get over how well it coped with having a passenger ( sights_alined), though it probably helps that we're both light. It's been making a noise for the past month though. I was convinced it had something to do with a fan in the cooling system, but tonight I've discovered otherwise. I'm taking a few days off this month as compensation for overtime in months past, so I'll see what my mechanic can do.
Settling into the waiting game again. Bit surprising to realise it's been a month and a half nearly. Still so much to go, but I think time will pass pretty fast with how busy we'll both be. I hope. So much to do, so much to save. I need this. We both do, I think.
I should get around to organising some pictures from the visit.

The last month has gone entirely too fast. (I'd probably say that regardless of the length of time, because there's still a goodbye at the end of it.) I don't think I can adequately describe how happy it made me to see sights_alined again. And to see her with my friends, and playing with my niece and nephews. Part of my family. It's nice knowing how seamlessly we transition into living together again. Not like I needed the reassurance, but it just helps make it clear that this is everything I want and need. Tomorrow is airport day and that sucks hard, but we're far past the halfway mark now and that makes it a bit easier to bear.
Details on the visit another time.

<3 bike. Monday morning at Tamworth, midway through the trip home. ( A few more pics from the trip in here. Some bike, some scenery.Collapse )
Not much in the way of drama.
Airport security pulled me up for a bag check. "We need to check your bag. You have some kind of rope in here?" "...I have ocky straps?" "Mm. They don't like you having those." They let me through anyway though. I'd like to know where it says they're not allowed, given that I checked all the luggage restrictions before packing.
And good thing I did pack them, because Ventura gave me the wrong bolt with the rack system I bought. This meant I couldn't fit it to my bike without raping the bolt hole (nothx) so I had to ocky-strap my bag over the pillion seat instead. This worked out relatively well, though I think proper soft panniers would look more awesome.
Anyway. Long ride, went well, though by the end of the second day I was on auto-pilot and just following my dad's back. (He met up with me in Singleton to escort me home, probably a lucky thing.) Would totally do again. And the Putty Rd has amazing corners, I love.

A month ago I emailed HLJ and asked if they were going to get in the small of the pink Yoko tshirt coming out in November. A medium is too large, I told them, so I was pretty keen on a small.
We will make the item available for order on our site soon. Please watch our site regularly for updates.
And so I did, as I already do.
Time passed, and today I checked HLJ and found that the M and the L were both in stock, but no S. So I emailed them again, asking what happened.
Unfortunately, Cospa is sold out of the small-size Yoko Skull pink shirt. There are no more stocks left of the shirt that we can get. We recommend that you try the M size if it fits.
...
I wish I'd pre-ordered some place else that was actually OFFERING it.

Journey preparations!
This is roughly the route I plan on taking to get my new bike back from Lismore: omg exciting google maps link from Lismore to Westmead :o
All the stops are fairly evenly spaced apart, and there's probably a couple more in there than I need. I'm just not sure yet how tired or sore I'll be. Or when I'll need fuel/food, since I don't know my fuel economy yet. After the first stop at Grafton, I'll have a much better idea. Based on my current fuel economy I should easily get over 300km a tank, possibly closer to 350 or more. Chances are I'll only need Grafton, Ebor/Uralla, Tamworth and Singleton. But resting my legs would still be good. Long trip is long. My uncle should be accompanying me to Ebor, and my dad was talking about meeting me in Singleton to escort me the rest of the way back. That'd be pretty special, I think.
I hope to take my camera and shuffle with me. The shuffle will keep me focused on riding, and I'd really love to take some pictures on the way down. It's a pretty epic trip to make by myself, particularly on a bike. The problem is that so far, the forecast looks like rain. Of course. Like everything else major that happens on a bike I own.
I ordered a light guard for my headlights last week. No rock damage for me, yay. I wanted to get a tank bag, but apparently the one I want (Ventura Mallory) won't be in stock till next year. But I should have my luggage rack waiting for me when I get up there. I plan on strapping my backpack to the back as well, though I'm not sure how just yet. The rack attaches differently to how my current bike does it, so I don't have the extra hooks to fasten ocky straps across the seat. But I'm sure I'll manage something.
Hoping to get my uncle to do an oil change for it this week, because I won't be able to do one on the way down and my mechanic says the factory stuff is crap as. I need to see if he's had any problems registering it D: Need to send him a tire repair kit as well, just in case. I'd take it with me, but I don't really think it's a good idea to take CO2 bottles on the plane >_> Also need to pack, because I know I'm going to do everything last minute and forget something important. Like my rain gear.
So looking forward to seeing missdeep again. <3 It's been too long, as usual. (I hear white chocolate will be involved! Possibly due to me demanding it.)
Sydney bike show was yesterday. I sat on bikes :3 Didn't like the Suzuki SV650S (posture was too sports-bike for me), but I loved the Yamaha FZ6S (more upright). I also liked the look of the Diversion, coming out next year. Didn't get to sit on it. Looks a lot like the FZ6S though. Kawasaki also had my bike there, in my colour. I was pleased and sat on it a lot, probably irritating the other people there. It felt really comfortable and looked really nice. Can't wait to ride it.

Apartment is going well, still putting random bits and pieces away. It's slowly getting more organised and looking more like a home I guess, but it still feels like a really long sleep-over. We could do with a tv still, I think leviathan777 is aiming to bring his huge tv down this weekend, just in time for Kubrick week.
I'm playing summer comp field hockey on Wednesday nights with a uni/animu club friend. Last night was my second game, and I think I'm slowly improving and remembering the skills I had in high school. (I keep realising that I graduated high school 7 years ago. SEVEN. It makes me feel a bit old.) I feel only pleasantly tired from it, this week. Last week my legs were painful, leaden pieces of junk. Before the game had finished, even. This is what a desk job has done to me. The aim of this is to get me marginally fit again while having fun. So far, so good.
My uncle is currently minding my new bike in Lismore. On the 29th I'm going to fly there, stay the night, and then bring it home over the following 2 days. It'll be around 850km, and I'll get to stay the night with missdeep at the halfway point.
As soon as I get it home it'll need its first service. O moneys. Today I got a back tire for my current bike, maps for my journey (only to realise that the woman gave me the coastal maps, when I'll be heading inland...) and comprehensive insurance for the bike. First time I've really been able to afford that, or even need it, given the value of my previous vehicles. I also posted my registration papers to my uncle, so he can get it registered in my name.
I feel pretty lucky to have all these people so willing to help me out with this.
Not much more than a month to go before life resumes. <3

Mmm.
Internet is on in the apartment, so I'll be in there shortly. Project release got pushed back to the 1st of February. This is excellent, as it means I'll be able to take at least a full week off while sights_alined is here. It also means I might get to scale back on the overtime. (Currently I have enough time-off-in-lieu built up to cover that week and then some.) New chain is going okay, I sprayed it today since it was due for it. MUST GET IN THIS HABIT. I also managed to get some of the stuff on the side of the wheel, even though I was spraying it entirely on a different angle. Stupid can. Tomorrow I should drop in and get the mechanic to adjust it for me. Perhaps I can also ask him about the very tiny scraping sound I heard tonight when I was rotating the wheel. It felt like the chain guard, but only on one part of the chain...

For Yam.
We were picking up a couch from a friend's place today, and Dad just says, "Hey, a blue-tongue!" Sure enough, one was crossing the road. By the time I got my phone out he was in the grass and freaking out because I was following him, but I tried. Sorry for dodgy pics. Definitely a blue-tongue though.

The chain is screwed on my bike again. I'm pretty terrible at remembering to keep it oiled, and as a consequence I now have a stretched link which clunks horribly every time it gets forcibly tugged off the rear sprocket and the distinct feeling my bike is going to fall apart when I'm going below 60km/h. More money I did not want to spend! Good job.
Today I am moving a whole bunch of stuff to our apartment. I don't think I'll be actually moving in till Monday (family stuff tomorrow, chain replacement Monday), but the idea is to get the bulk of it all in today. Mainly awkward furniture and as many figures and books as I can manage.
What stupidly hard hobbies to take with you. Massive amounts of space (figures) and weight (books). Exactly what you want to avoid when moving??
Anyway. I am so woefully under-prepared what with all the work I've been doing and all the running around to get forms signed and keys and such. Last night I stared at my room and swore that there was more stuff in it than when I started. There are books and trinkets EVERYWHERE. I have to keep telling myself it's because my wardrobe is almost empty and all my shelving is gone. Seems like it never ends, and yet the spare room is filled with boxes? I think I'll just transport what I have, and pack everything else later. Maybe when I have more boxes.
Better get ready to go. It's going to be a long day. <3

Somehow we got the apartment we applied for. Out of the half dozen or so applicants. Not sure why a couple of newly-employed renting noobs had the best application, but I'm definitely not complaining. We sign the lease next week. Good thing I got furniture on Monday. I'm going to have to pack the rest of my figures up D: Can pretty much guarantee I'll be thinking, "Why do I own all of this crap?!" in the next week or two.
Got home from work after that to find a belated birthday card from my aunt wishing me a FABULOUS day. Then I won $20 on the birthday scratchies she sent with it.
Just over 9 weeks till I see sights_alined again.
This is a good week. <3 A lucky week. <3 I don't know what I did to get it, but I'm grateful. <3
